Previous Ranger Activity

In the previous decade GNA has worked with a total of 40 teams of rangers. The areas highlighted in pink on the map above, show the region covered by the 32 ranger groups that we no longer work with. Of the thousands of kilometres of coastline covered by these previous activities, 2688 nets were recorded.

Many of the engagements with past ranger teams were single events. Below is a table showing the number of nets, kms surveyed or patrolled, animals found, and years working with GNA by those ranger teams. Having removed the backlog of nets, most of these groups are now able to manage the problem without our continued support.

The eight ranger groups we currently work with, manage the region of highest abundance of nets (highlighted in green). They have recorded more than 10,000 nets. Compared to the rest of the north Australian coastline, this part of the Gulf of Carpentaria requires ongoing managemement.
